It’s closet clean out time. So it’s the perfect time to decide what to keep and what to let go. Here are the items that I have hung onto for years! And, I actually wear them.

At the end of the day, clothes are just supposed to serve a purpose. Sometimes clothes are more for a utilitarian objective, the protect us from the elements. Often times, in my opinion, they are to enhance your essence. When we keep clothes that don’t do that, we are just creating clutter. That clutter gets in the way of us wearing those gems in our closet. I know for me, I end up not seeing some items in my closet due to clutter.

By the way, it’s been awhile since I created a post. I’m going to be doing more “round up” posts with more pieces from time to time.

The Feeling Factor

The Intersection Between Style & Psychology

If your weight has fluctuated a bit over the last ten years, you’re not alone! Mine has as well. I stopped the good old – I will wear it when I loose weight game. That leads to a cycle of feeling like you aren’t good enough, creating clutter, and waiting for something that may not happen. I get into this shift in this post. Plus, I bet there are some great things you can discover that you love about your current body. You just need to give it a chance. So if your weight has changed a bit over the years, keeping items can be tough.

That also means that some of my favorite items are not my current size. What I do in those instances is sell that item and then replace it. That’s what I did with a basic white button up shirt that was in this post.

Here are the items I’ve hung onto for years or have replaced:

Item 1: A Trench Coat

A trench coat is the perfect fall/winter item when it fits you well. It’s the ideal item to layer over a dress or jeggings with a sweater. For me, I like one that is not too bulky so that it doesn’t add volume. I like more of a drapey feel to the fabric. A khaki trench will work with so many colors too. I do have one black one from Banana Republic that is thicker. I have kept that one forever.

Item 2: A Blazer

I have at least eight to ten blazers in my closet. A few of those are black (that you’ve seen all over my blog). But I think a good plaid one for visual interest is good too. Just like a trench, I throw these on over dresses, jeggings and skirts. As far as size fluctuation, my blazers have been more forgiving. I can wear my older ones without much of a problem.

Item 3: A Striped Top

I own so many black and white striped top! I bought this one at least four years ago. A well fitting striped top is almost always chic. Bonus points if it is a boat neck style. I like to wear mine with skirts and jeggings. These tops are perfect for adding a pop of color too.

Item 4: A Little Black Dress – That Fits

The LBD is almost a no-brainer. However, it has be one that fits and makes you feel dynamite. The one I have here has been with me since at least 2009. I has a good amount of stretch in it so it worked regardless of my size.

Item 5: A Shirt Dress

This is an unlikely wardrobe staple. Let me tell you why I keep these. A well fitting shirt dress is usually pretty structured. That works well for us ladies with Curves! Also, it’s a versatile item. I wear my shirt dresses with the sleeves rolled down or up depending on the season.
